About the role
The primary focus for this role is the operation and maintenance of our bespoke high pressure breathing quality compressed air systems, along with our low pressure factory air systems. The HP systems are novel, complex and large-scale, and are at the heart of our manufacturing process at Blyth.
The role is filled with rewarding challenges and compliance requirements, and as the systems constantly evolve there are great opportunities for learning new skills and gaining experience not found anywhere else.
Reporting to the Facilities Manager (Blyth) and working closely with the Mechanical Systems Manager (MSM), the role has responsibility for the day-to-day delivery of effective operation, maintenance, repair and project support of the high and low pressure compressed air generation and distribution equipment and systems.
This includes:
Conducting daily checks, condition monitoring and watchkeeping. Providing initial fault-finding diagnostics and escalating to the MSM, or a contractor where required.
Monitoring the quality of the breathing air produced through instrumentation, log keeping and air quality testing. Filter changes to be completed when required.
Coordinating with end users and other stakeholders to conduct Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), Reactive Maintenance & Repair, within established service levels, to correct H&S standards including LOTO and PtW and in accordance with PSSR inspection schedules.
Providing technical support during equipment breakdowns.
Utilising problem solving principles to undertake root cause analysis of issues and discussing potential improvements with the Mechanical Systems Manager.
Implementing proactive measures to enhance energy efficiency, sustainability, reliability, and uptime.
Collaborating with external suppliers and specialists for fault-finding, and ensuring timely, comprehensive reporting of major issues and repairs.
Undertaking project work involving machine moves, installations, upgrades, and improvements to both compressors and distribution systems.
Maintaining accurate maintenance records in the CAFM system, managing spare parts inventory, and ensuring high housekeeping standards in assigned areas.
Ensuring own qualifications and skills are up to date for the full range of responsibilities
Supporting the technical development of apprentices and other colleagues.
In addition, this role:
Is included in the provision of year round out-of-hours support for the Blyth sites in the form of an on‑call rota which provides telephone or in person support, as required.
May occasionally be required to travel offsite for supplier visits, training, or equipment inspections.
Additional duties may be assigned as required, consistent with the nature and level of the role.

Size of team/environment - This role sits within the Blyth based FM Operations team and undertakes activities across the Blyth sites. The FM Operations team is a 7 person component of the broader 13 person UK Estates & Facilities Management team also based at Blyth.
Role Requirements
Education/Qualifications
Minimum of a level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship or equivalent, in a related discipline.
Desirable
Compressor OEM service training
Swagelok certified installer
H&S Qualification - IOSH preferred
Level 4 Certificate (HNC) in Mechanical Engineering or associated discipline
Related Experience
Experience in operating, diagnosing and maintaining a large multi building distributed compressed gas system, including breathing air compressors at 200bar +.
Understand the mechanical principles of compressed air generation, distribution, safety and control.
Basic maintenance and troubleshooting of multiple reciprocating and screw air/gas compressors.
Maintenance of auxiliary equipment such as pumps, filters, valves and pneumatic control Basic understanding of electrical control systems.
Experience of fault-finding and diagnostics of general mechanical equipment and building services
Desirable
Experience of working within Safe Systems of Work and use of LOTO and Permit to Work systems
Working knowledge of Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR)
Experience of working with HVAC systems, inc. chilled water, VRF & VRV, heat recovery units
Skills, Special Competencies
Experience with root cause analysis
